High school seniors still have two weeks to submit an essay that could earn them $500 toward college expenses.

The Clarksville Area Ministerial Association is offering three academic scholarships for the coming school year 2009-10.

Interested students must submit a three-page essay developing the theme "Dr. King's Dream for America."

The deadline for receipt at the Ministerial Association office is no later than 5 p.m. April 30.

"This is the 10th year the association has sponsored the essay contest. The number of scholarships we are able to award is based on how much money we take in from our fundraisers," said the Rev. Tommy Vallejos, association president.

Two Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. scholarships and one Dr. William H. Corley scholarship will be offered this year.

Corley died in November 2008. He was pastor at Community Church and pioneered several churches. He served in various association roles throughout the years.

Vallejos said the contest provides students an opportunity to reflect on leadership and the value of each individual.

"We feel the essay contest is important because the association supports schools in their 100 percent graduation initiative; this is a way for us to give back," Vallejos said.

Each scholarship will be awarded based on the merit of an essay submitted to the association. Submitted essays will be judged by the association's executive committee, and scholarship presentations will be scheduled at each winning student's school.

Vallejos emphasized students entering essays must:

Be a high school senior. Be accepted by a college or university. Submit an essay no later than April 30. Fulfill the content requirements of the essay. Not plagiarize another person's work. Each essay will be judged on the student's writing ability to clearly articulate King's ideas and principles and how they apply to today's world.
